Effects Of Steroid Use
Steroids are derived from testosterone. Testosterone is produced by both males and females, but females produce much less males. Since testosterone is responsible for tissue building and masculinizing in males, steroids help to speed up the process of muscle building by increasing the amount of testosterone in the body. The steroids also have an effect of the growth of reproductive organs, males that use steroids early in development will see an increase in penal length and girth as well as development of pubic and facial hair. The fact that steroids allow people to increase in mass as well as lose fat in a short period of time, make them very appealing to many people. However, there are many negative effects caused by the abuse of steroids.
This list of negative effects is a list reported by the U.S. Department of Health and taken from (Anabolic Steroids, 1995.) These are just some established and possible effects:
Acne, Abdominal pains, Aggressive, combative behavior, Anaphylactic shock, baldness (female danger, irreversible), Black tarry stools, Bleeding unusually, Bloody regurgitation, breath odor unpleasant, Bone pain, Breasts (male swelling or soreness), Cancer, Chills, Cholesterol imbalances, Death, Depression, Diarrhea, Edema (morbid fluid accumulation), Fetal damage, Fever, Gallstones, Growth stunted, Headache (continuing), Healing of injuring retarded, Heart attack, High blood pressure, Hirsutism (irreversible hairiness), Hives, Hypercalcemia (excessive calcium), Impotence, Immunity impairment, Insomnia, Jaundice, Kidney disease, Kidney stones, Listlessness, Liver disease and or rumors, Menstrual irregularities, Muscle cramps, Muscle tendons & ligaments injury, Nausea, Oily skin, Priapism (painful male organ), prostate enlargement, Purple-red blotches on body inside mouth or nose, Rashes, Septic shock (blood poisoning), Sexual problems, Sore tongue, Sterility (reversible), Stroke, Testicular atrophy, Urinary problems, Weight gain or loss (unexplained)
I went through the trouble of typing out this long list for a very important reason. I wanted to show you that there are many many downsides to taking steroids. The side effects range anywhere from a sore tongue to heart attacks and kidney diseases. I think it is important for everyone to be aware that there are dangers and it can happen to you! There are however some positive medical uses for steroids. Steroids can be used to cure blood disorders, connecting tissue disease, some forms of cancers, and arthritis. It is very important though that we try to keep steroid use limited to these types of things because as you can see, steroids are very dangerous and need to be controlled.
